string experiences

okay so im here to help cellist with string reecomendations I will give my personal experience with strings I have used!

Jargar standard and silver
Medium set(Blue) the set itself is very warm and responisve with medium dark tone. The g and c can be hard to engage. The A and d tend to blend well with many different G and c
Dolce set(Aqua green) have a very warm vibrancy the g and c need breaking in time and can be hard to hear
Forte set red are amazing espically the A and d so warm and rich in overtone with much complexity the g and c again are beautiful and speak easier than the other tensions.
The silver g and c strings have a gut like quality ready and reedy and add sweet depth(great for chamber music)

Larsen strings
First of all for me i find its better to use standar A and solo d
The A and D are almost standard on all cellos. similar to jargar with more definition and overtone complexity
The g and c standard are one of te greatest string i ever played i cant believe more cellist dont use them
I orderd a set of wire cores and are waiting and will post when i get them but i hear they have great overtone complexity.

Helicore by DAddario
Are amazing and if you dont want to waste money i would adivise buying this set in medium the sound is warm and powerful perfect fifths and even smooth transition.

Kaplan by DAddario similar between larsen and jargar are a gorgeous singing string also blend well with many g and c's and speak well.

Pirastro eudoxa my most favorite string in the world well one of them.
This string sounds warm and small but carries to every inch of a concert hall. The sound is out of this world one of the most complex string of overtone warmth and color. the a is fragile but deff a good choice

pirastro olive the powerful noble gut string. The a is crap in my opinion i would reecomend using the evah pirazzi as i did. The sound is brighter than the eudoxa wit same traits the sound is very sophiticated and refined.

pirastro Aricore the make my favorite A and d the sound was similar to eudoxa with less complexity great for toning down harsh chinese cellos.

Pirastro permanent amazing solo sound boooming bass crisp clear clean sound would describe these strings. great for concerto players i love these when i play haydn, saint saens and elgar concertos. The g and c are a great match for jargar, larsen,or kaplan.

Pirastro obligato were nice but sound metallic and need 2 weeks to play in i love the d g and c they sound great or better than gut when i tune down. The sound is stronger than a spirocore without the metallic sound and they have amazing bow response.

Prim i use these when i play latin music with my family and freinds like salsa, pachanga, guarchar, guaguanco etc.. They have a bright sound that is good for non classical music. Also the g and c are amazing if you cant afford spirocores the g is a great match for the spirocore c both in medium.

Prim soft sound were wahhh whatever to me i mean i have a set of them i use them more as a back up just in cae string. I actually find them more metallic than the mediums. The soft tone are noting special.

Thomatik infeld once of the finest string makers

Dominant great warm dark sound if thats what you favor very soft and lush. They just take at least 2 weeks to settle down that metallic sound which eventually goes away. Awesome bow response the g and c are great maches for jargar and larsen.

Belcanto gold another one of my favorites it has a sweet warm sound almost to warm at times but loud with a responsive voice crisp clean and clean a very pure string.

spirocore silver great g and c i love matching them with jargar forte a and d and mr yo yo ma does. They have an edge that brings out the low end of the cello.

Tungsten which is what i use now has the most depth and vibrancy of all c ang strings i have tried they really really really bring out that low end and have huge warm sound they sound metallic at first but it dies off in about a week

Red label simply suuuuuccckkks please dont use them

Damian dlugolecki makes handmade custom gut strings these were my most favorite and have a set being made now they are expensive but highly reccomended for chamber musicians are anyone seeking that wamr gut sound.

My favortie combinations

Jargar medium a and d(or larsen a and solo d) spirocore tungsten or silver g and c provides cello with huge deep depth sound crisp clean and clear with even transition from g to d.

Jargar forte a and d(or standard a and d) matched with spirocore or tungsten g and c similar to above with deeper bass

jargar medium or larsen medium matched with helicore g and c the sound is even and vibrant and gives a classi cello sound.

Larsen or jargar top with pirastro permanent bottom big sound dark tone.

obligato a and d or evah pirazzi matched with eudoxa or olive g anc provides refined warm far carrying tone.

aricore a and d with helicore g and c simply pure nice tone
I also enjoy playing bottom three gut or synthetic with steel a great choice for a would be larsen, evah pirazzi they are designed to blend easily with other strings.

This is my first blog but i will post more as i try more strings.

Hey thanks for the string reviews, it is helpful! I wish I could try a bunch myself, but I just don't have the money!
I want to get a new A and D string, and I thought I'd get your opinion.
I'm used to Jargars and I did have Larsens once. I would like to try something that is very deep and rich, and I'm really attracted to the idea of a string with a lot of good overtones. But I love to be able to get a good bite out of my strings, and I like to use a lot of pressure. My biggest pet peeves would be weak feeling strings and tinny whiny sounding strings.
I'm thinking about trying either Kaplans, or Pirastro Passione in the stark gauge. Any suggestions?

This was really helpful! I'm trying right now to decide between spirocore tungsten and silver, and I'm having trouble!
Oh also, fyi some of the colors of your text were really hard to read, but I really enjoyed reading it!
